View Full Version : Appomattox Challenge - MaryAnne's Upcoming Demotion

Brian Coltrane

Yep, you read that right. The tables are being turned.

First, though, thanks again to everyone who participated in the Bail Bond Bonus Challenge. We had great updates to Dukes of Hazzard Fanfic.com and everybody did a fine job on their stories. I, of course, appreciated the contributions on a personal level, in addition to enjoying the stories themselves. Sal-ute!

And now, it’s time for some friendly revenge. I’m officially announcing the Appomattox Challenge, which puts MaryAnne’s authority on the line.

Quite simply, if we don’t get in a few stories by April 09, then MaryAnne is to surrender all rank and title to me, unconditionally. Then, I’ll be able to do all kinds of ruthless stuff like ban her from HazzardNet for a change. And don’t think I won’t do it! Though I might send her on some tedious errands and heap all kinds of menial tasks on her beforehand. Once she’s out of the way, I can rearrange a few things, and get a bigger cut of that 50% of 50% of 50%.

There ya have it. Ya’ll have from now until April 09, to turn in a Dukes of Hazzard fanfic story. Length and topic up to you. Help ransom MaryAnne’s badge and all it stands for.

Or, do nothing and therefore assure my new elevated position within HNet’s hierarchy. Muahahaha!

Brian

P.S. MaryAnne, you may wanna tidy up your desk a bit. Heh heh.

Ban MaryAnne?! Brian takin' over?! Crickets and Crocs! This is outrageous!

If Brian takes over, there will be chaos in the streets! The sun will shine during the night and the night will become day! The world will revolve backwards! All clocks will run counter clockwise! Cats and dogs will be living together! It's not natural! It's insane!

As an upholder of nature and a fellow officer of the law, it my sworn duty to help protect the order which is here; I will take your challenge Mr. Coltrane!

Don't worry MaryAnne, you have the endorsement of the Wildlife department behind ya!

*Looks to the crowd* My fellow Hazzardites, we can not sit back and let this idly happen! It's time to take action! We need to preserve what we love. If you love the way Hazzardnet is, then stand up and fight for it! Write a story! Save MaryAnne's badge!

I call all Enos writers out there, (and I know you're out there guys), rally to this cause! Help save Hazzardnet and MaryAnne!

If Brian takes over there is no telling what will happen. Why, the whole format of the forums could change from our favorite orange and black to pink, with purple polka dots! Brian is a great leader but he's known for chaos and randomness. Help restore order! Save MaryAnne!

It's time to start writing! *pounds fist into hand then looks around kind of clueless* Um... Has anyone seen my pencil?

First, thank ya Val! I know I can always rely on fellow officers of the law in my time of need. Khee!

Meanwhile, Brian....turn about is fair play I guess. Since I arbitrarely put your posterior on the line (for a good reason I might add!) it only seems fitting for you to do the same. Tho', I'm suspicious that this comes so soon after you were promoted to Administrator around here. Me thinks you're harboring some dangerous ambitions, cousin.

Nonetheless, in the interest of friendly revenge, I accept your challenge. Although you're not challenging me directly to write a story, I can't sit back and assume everyone's gonna rush to my aide just as strongly as they came to yours. Afterall, some may not want to help me. For some reason I tend to strike fear into most people and they may decide they'd rather have the sun shine at night and for the forums to be pink with purple polka dots.

So I too will be working on a little something for Appomattox Day, since it's my badge that's on the line. And to prevent the pink and purple polka dot theme from taking over the forums! GAH!

Meadowmufn

Oh lawdy. As long as there's breath in my body, the forums will NOT be pink with purple polka dots. So Brian, cross that right off yer list of things to do if the Deputy loses this one. ;)

Oh, my plans for a New Coltrane Order don't invole polka dots, don't worry. Any color changes I make are the least of yer problems.

I'm sure we'll all miss MaryAnne. But let's look upon this as an opportunity for a radically new structure.

03-08-2007, 03:24 AM
For the purpose o' this particular challenge, you can send the story to http://www.hazzardnet.com/images/email.jpg . That box is viewable by myself, MaryAnne and MeadowMufn, so we'll all know these stories are coming in. (This way, I can't cheat and claim that nothing came in. Not that I'd cheat. Much.)

Stories will be posted on DukesofHazzardFanfic.com .

Instead of writing a story, however, you could watch Dukes DVD's for the next month and let chaos take it's course!

Then, things will be changing once MaryAnne is out of the way - and MeadowMufn has got to sleep sometime! I'll have plenty of opportunity to wreak a little havoc. Ahh, where to start.... I've got at least 30 days to ponder my schemes.

Brian,

I don't know if you particularly like getting shpammed to death through the webmaster email address, but I know I certainly don't. So, I've replaced the email address you listed with an image so shpambots hopefully don't grab it and send us all sorts of emails about hot stock tips or how to increase the size of our non-existent male parts. :D

Brian,

You forget that I'm a programmer and wrote a good chunk of the code that has run HNet over the years. HNet can certainly shpy on you for me and alert me to any misdeeds you might be up to. In fact, I'll just set my Palm Treo next to the bed every night and setup HNet to text message me any time you login. I'm a very light sleeper. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Or maybe not. But you won't know if I set that up, will you? MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ok, I've had my quota of evil laughs for today. I'm gonna go watch tv.

*Climbs up ontop of the proverbaly soap box*

Hazzardites! Aren't you concerned? Isn't anyone besides me, MaryAnne and MM worried about the possibility of Hazzard going into the hands of chaos? I understand that you got control over things MM, but Brian is right you do have to sleep sometime, which means he will have time to come up with new schemes and plots. Citizens, this is serious! We need to rally to the cause and help back MaryAnne. He can't take MaryAnne's badge if the citizens of Hazzard show that we don't want it taken away!

Like I called out to all my fellow Enos writers before, we must unite! Writers, it's time to write and save MaryAnne's badge!

*blows in a conch shell to rally up the Hazzardnet writers*

I don't care if you call yourself a writer or not, write some kind of story to send to help MaryAnne! Come on gang, we need to fight for the rite to write! Flood that mailbox!

*looks around*

Well Val, atleast you, me, Mufn and d_tori are concerend. Everyone else is either busy working on stories already or....they're not at all concerned about me losing my badge. *shrugs* Eh, I'll admit it's not as dramatic as tossing Brian into jail. For oblivion.

Although, he could just as easily do that to me once he's secured the proper rank and title. I wouldn't put it past him.

*sighs dramatically* Maybe, deep down, some folks would rather see me removed and they just don't want to admit it.

Now now Deputy, is that a sad face I see? You run a tight ship around here and without you Hnet would sink like the Titanic, and you of all people should know that. When a Coltrane is in trouble I have to help, I'm terribly fond of all of you Coltranes. :) So...with that in mind, I'll help you keep your badge... Don't worry MaryAnne, no one wants to see you booted out.;)

I've been watching the mailbox, and it seems the entries are pretty few and far between. MaryAnne, more n' likely, will be handing over her rank and title to me on April 9th.

I'm gonna enjoy this.

I've got a few inaugural ideas in mind to commemorate this suspicious...er, auspicious, occassion. And while I've debated whether to ban MaryAnne for sport or not, I might find more satisfaction in requiring her to modify her avatar and signature to something of my own choosing. That way she can pledge her allegiance to me on a regular basis.

Generous, eh? I thought so.

I've got worse...or, I mean better, things in store besides that. I want to make this a smooth and somewhat painless transition. A new power structure need not be filled with strife and mayhem.

MUAHAHAHAHA!!!! Ahem.

*Yawns and looks at the calendar*

Only nine more days now, left in this challenge.... Mmm, since nobody seems to care anymore I just guess I won't care either.

Yep, the Ol' Game Warden is fed up. She's calling it quits. I'm going to just surrender myself to the evitable and go sit on the couch all day, drinking chocolate milk and eating snack cakes. Yep... It's just too hard to write.

Oh whoe is thee... I guess MaryAnne is on her own. No Enos fans are coming to your rescue MaryAnne. It's over, we lost. We should put down our torches and become mindless zombies of 'Youtube'.

'Chaaaarlie, Chaaarlie! We're going to Candy Mountain Charlie! Won't you join us?'

Yep, going to sit around and watch Charlie the Unicorn on youtube till our eyes bug out. Who needs Dukes.

*Brrrrup!* Oh excuse me, too much chocolate milk I guess.

*A blond man steps up to a borrowed soapbox carrying a big golden crown adorned with black onyx and diamonds, clearing throat and peering out at all the Hazzardites*

My fellow Hazzardites, I am here today to speed up the inevitable...
*raising black and diamond crown* Today is a very special day. So let us all simply accept our fate and declare ourselves a king...

I hereby declare that Brian Coltrane is now KING OF ALL HAZZARDNET!

*takes the crown and puts it on a brunette head then gives a dramatic bow*

All hail your Majesty!!! We will follow you oh black clad one!! All the power is yours!!

*Stands up straight, once again peering out at the fellow Hazzardites*
Join me fellow Hazzardites in honoring our new King!!

Okay, okay....let's not all give up...we still have 9 days...okay 8 and a half - some of us write better under pressure ya know.

Now of course...should Brian win, I will become his loyal follower...but let's not give up the game quite yet...hmmm?

Even if Brian doesn't win...we all know that MaryAnne and Brian are a formidable duo...so whatever happens...I trust Hazzardnet will be in good hands.

But it might be better if it wasn't all in Brian's hands.

Val Strate
04-01-2007, 09:33 PM
Nope, we're doomed. All doomed to a hopeless rein by the black clad Coltrane. Dooooooooomed!

I give up. I surrender... I give up my magic conch shell of rally-dome and hand over my soapbox. Stick a fork in me I'm done... Through... Over...

All hail Brian Coltrane! King of Hazzard County! May he rein supreme!

The Game Warden has lost all hope in the system. Justice is a futile cause. Face it... This is like Global warming... It's doomed to happen.

If we surrender to him now, maybe he'll be easier on the punishment he gives us later after we fail.

DOOOOOOOOOMMMED!

Yes, ok... Not as many fell for it as I wanted but yes... It's Baloney.

April Fools!

No I haven't given up. I'm still working away at a fic to save MaryAnne. I need help though.

I mean come on guys! Me alone isn't going to save MaryAnne's badge! I know there is a whole troop of ya out there that can write and will in order to save law and order of Hazzard!

*Gets out blue and white paint and paints face, then steps up onto of the soapbox and blows the magic conch one more time.*

They may take our lives but they can never take our FREEDOM!

A fight for justice is a fight for freedom!

04-03-2007, 01:38 AM
Val, ain't you over-reacting just a bit? I mean, comparing my ascention to a higher rank to the devestation of global warming? And then suggesting that preventing my promotion equals a fight for justice and freedom?

Come on, you know I'm a creampuff to work with. I'm easy going, relaxed, and casual. Why, me taking over MaryAnne's rank would hardly be noticed for the most part.

Think about it, life around here could be a lot easier in the near future. At least for those who choose to stay on my good side.

You should follow Alex's wise example. You can't go wrong by dispensing some flattery and getting me a few presents. It'll help the transition of power go much smoother.

MeadowMufn, the idea of owning HazzardNet outright never crossed my mind. No place to put it, for one thing. And the minute something technical blew up, I'd be calling you anyway. I'm content to have as much power and influence as possible while letting somebody else hold the bag on the details.

I know you're looking forward to my upcoming promotion, seeing as how you haven't turned in a story on MaryAnne's behalf. :D

Meadowmufn
04-04-2007, 05:45 AM
Well, I think it's only fair that since MaryAnne put herself on the line in her Bail Bond challenge, you should have some risk in your challenge. If you don't submit a story too, you can't assume MaryAnne's rank should she fail to produce a story. Khee! Three can play that game...

Brian Coltrane
04-04-2007, 07:10 AM
What?! Wait a minute. There's less than a week! You wanna change the deal now? Waaaait a minute.....

Right now, MaryAnne's only hope of keeping her place in the ranks is if enough other people come through for her and submit a story. So if I'm the one to benefit by the said change in ranks, why on earth would I turn in a story? It would end up counting towards her ransom. Hence my lazy taunts.

But if you want to make it a sort of side challenge with me, to cough up a story of my own - with less than a week left - okay, but you're gonna halfta pony up a little risk of yer own, Mufn ol' cousin ol' buddy.

How about you stand with MaryAnne on this one. If she gets demoted due to lack of story entries, then so do you. Then each of you would get the honor of reporting to me, and having avatars and signatures of my own choosing, and whatever else I come up with for amusement.

Actually Brian has a point about turning in a story himself. Even tho' I put myself on the line as well in the Bail Bond Challenge, I didn't write a story as it would have been a conflict o' interest.

A real noble gesture this time around would be for Brian to lose all rank and privilege same as me. But then....that would put a damper on the whole point of this challenge to begin with.

Of course, all three of us could put our heads collectively on the chopping block and if an insufficient number of stories are turned in, we just turn out the lights and say "so long HNet!"

Wow. Talk about a motivator. Why didn't we think of that one four weeks ago? ROFL

Anyway, I think people are secretly hoping for regime change, they just don't want to admit to spare my feelings. I think most folks would rather see Brian run amok around here and see me reduced to lackey status.

Wait a minute. Doesn't Brian already runs amok around here and I'm already at lackey status?

MaryAnne

Brian Coltrane

2 and 5/8ths

HA! Not quite. There were 8 stories total, turned in for the last challenge. I'd think that MaryAnne could muster up an equal amount of support to keep her badge outta hock. Therefore, 8 stories is the target.

If we get close to that, like 6 or 7, I'll probably be lenient. Otherwise, off with her head! Er, badge.

Brian

Meadowmufn
04-05-2007, 02:48 AM
Brian runs amok here til somebody notices and locks him up for a bit. Then we let him loose again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. LOL.

But honestly, do you think anyone would notice if we all went into exile from HNet for a while? Khee! There's the off chance that they might, so perhaps to prevent copious wailing, gnashing of teeth, and a run on the sackcloth market, we should wager something a little more innocuous.

Like... whoever loses has to watch Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow AND post a report about it that includes intimate details, so we'll know the person or persons watched it. Khee! Actually, that's not really innocuous, is it? That's actually tantamount to torture in my book. But hey, it makes for some good drama, don't it? :D

Thank God I won a free Netflix subscription, cuz if I lose I ain't spendin' a dime on that sh... umm, sh...shilly dvd! Khee!

I've never backed down from a challenge. I'm willing to put up my own stakes but Mufn has to ante up too. There's roughly five days left, so if we're gonna make this worse we'd better clarify the bet.

That being said...MaryAnne, I doubt people are really rooting for a regime change. They might be curious as to the shenanigans I'll pull, but that doesn't mean you're not appreciated. Besides, there's a few days left for people to send in their stuff. As much as I'll enjoy getting my boots polished, and having tributes made, I'm not out to wound your ego. So I'll overlook the little things, like when you bow and issue the bird at the same time.

Sorry for the dramatic license Brian but it's sometimes essential for motivation. Yes you're a cream puff, but I don't want to see Hazzardnet go to all cream and no puff.

I might be able to live with casual Fridays around the place but everyday... no.

Besides as a Strate and Game Warden, I couldn't live with myself knowing I didn't support my fellow officer. Its part of my character Brian, I took an oath to be a law enforcer when I came here. So to go against my fellow lawwoman and my friend is treason for me.

So forgive me for the exaggeration of the character of your rein IF you are promoted, but it's a handy motivator to get people to rally to my cause. It's nothing personal... It's just business...

By the way, speaking of business... How is that Barbie/Dukes crossover coming? Did you buy yourself any visual aids to help you with the writing process or you waiting for the Fairytopia DVD to show up in your Easter basket?

A Dukes/Barbie crossover, oh my and I thought I came up with some twisted crossovers. I think that might even beat my Dukes/Rocky Horror Picture Show crossover. Though that is a tough call. On the plus side, I have to acknowledge that we've seen some fresh entries from folks who haven't participated in prior challenges. That's pretty cool and I know MaryAnne appreciates everybody's efforts. ( I do too, because I get a buncha new stuff to read. )

And to clear this up....no, I didn't fill up the HazzardNet email account. That, my friends, is true Coltrane luck and this time it was working in my favor more than MaryAnne's! Tho' the problem was temporary and I just got in another story a few minutes ago. Still, maybe HazzardNet itself - which is sentient enuff to scare us sometimes - wants a change in power.

But I've sworn to play by the rules here, so the clock will continue to run. I'll count up things on Tuesday, and make the official announcement of my new promotion - or MaryAnne's full reinstatement - on Wednesday. Then, we'll find out for whom the dog collar fits.

Submitted for your approval... A fanfic written for the Appomattox Challenge. The citizens of a small town find that strangers ain't always just friends you haven't met yet. And those strangers find that they've just crossed over into.... <Twilight Zone music> Hazzard County.

I just got a second message saying that my story was undeliverable and now it is past the deadline, and I am 100 shades of worried. Did anyone get my story submission, and are there any others who are getting these sorts of messages as well? I don't mean to be a grouch, but if the deadline was yesterday, and my story isn't getting in because of a full mailbox, then that's really not fair, nor is it my fault.

I did put a lot of extra effort into my submission, so please let me know, because I want my work to count. :(

I'm pretty sure we got it. I'm not sure why you're getting undeliverable messages. I cleared out the HNet mailbox last night just to make sure.

Anyhoo, Bri is currently going over submissions and will make an announcement soon.

Well either them fireworks are celebretory that I've retained my badge, or they're for the final farewell.

Awright, cousin, ya got half the town here on the edge of their seats. What's the verdict?????????????????

Awright, awright, I've got all the stories here, and I'm adding up the tally. We'll have the official results in just a few minutes.

Daney, nice pic, but this wasn't a celebrity death match or anything. Good melodrama, though. HEH!

Good melodrama? Look who's talkin'! (Heck, look who is talkin'. ROFL)

Cousin, you've had some 24 hours to add up those stories. "Somebody's stallin'. Stallin' makes me nervous...."

Don't gitcher uniform in a wrinkle! I'm not stalling. Don't get nervous and edgy on me now.

I have a question, as long as it's taken to get a tally, how long is it going to take for the stories to be posted? Hmmmm?

MaryAnne, have I ever told you what a treat it is, to work with ya? Yer subtle little motivators mean so much.

AWRIGHT! Official results!

10 total entries were submitted. Of those, one is MaryAnne's own incomplete story. But as I didn't finish mine either, I can't count that one against anything.

The entries in this challenge exceeded the number that came in for the last challenge. The community has spoken. MaryAnne's badge and rank remains intact. The HazzardNet hierarchy remains as its been.

This means that MaryAnne will not be subject to my insidious little schemes, such as changing her avatar to read "Bad Cop - No Donut" and making her use signatures that glorify yers truly.

HazzardNet, as well, will not be undergoing any signifigant changes that may have been otherwise induced by me. At least this time.

Well, that depends on how well we faired here. If I retain my badge, I'll be posting the stories up by this weekend. If I've lost my badge and am at the mercy of Brian and he dictates what tasks I'm to do, I'll be posting the stories up by this weekend, more 'n likley.

Ooooo!! TEN?! Or rather... NINE?! KHEEHAAAA!!

I'd definetly say the community has spoken. Very clearly I might add. Khee!! A very big thank you to all of you who wrote a story. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Now, Brian, admit it. You'd have missed my subtle motivators. More 'r less because I wouldn'ta been so subtle.

And speakin' of motivators, since the chain of command remains as it has, I should put you to work getting those stories ready to be posted....

Yes ma'am. And may I just say, that I'm personally delighted to have things remain just as they are. I'm sure you didn't take any of my idle jests seriously. I'm happy just to be a part of the team here.

And since I'm not making any signifigant changes to HazzardNet, I'm sure that goes for you too....right?

Hmmm....well, now that you mention it I've considered a few minor changes to things here at HNet. I was thinkin' your avatar could use an update. Something like a pic of the County Sheriff's patch (or we can use the Atlanta one if you prefer). Or a new title for you. Instead of Lord of the Outlaws, how about Lord of the Lapdogs? We still have the dog collar around somewhere don't we...?

I've also noticed you don't use a signature. Maybe I could come up with something for ya. A nice pic of a Chevy? We all know you dig Chevys. How about a nice Chevy.....Caprice? You'd like that wouldn't you?

Hmm....so many things to consider....

Brian Coltrane

Lord of the lap dogs?! MaryAnne, that's just rotten.

I admire your wicked streak, but how about we let things settle and get back to what passes for normal, eh? Tho' I'll wear the dog collar if it makes you happy. Truce? Peace? Cousinhood?

Woohoo! Ten submissions! That's awesome! Guess the magic conch shell really does work! *lifts conch shell*

Yipppeee! MaryAnne keeps her badge! Way to go Hazzard! It's great to hear that and it's awesome to hear that some new writers submitted stuff. Cool! New stuff to read is always awesome.

I just want to thank all the Enos writers out there. I know I've been pulling you guys chains to get stuff in and I haven't seen the stories yet but from the sounds of things some of you guys came through. Way to go guys!

Ooooo! A dog leash challenge! That could be fun! I like puppies! So cute and cuddly, can we get a puppy for Hnet? I think Flash needs a friend.

HNet already has a puppy! Her name is Sadie. She's half beagle, so I'm sure she'd get along with fellow hound Flash. Khee!

Ok, maybe it's better to rest a bit.

I've started a post in Round Robin called "The Very First Duke In Hazzard" and it takes in what will become Hazzard in 1776. It has four main characters in it and they are George Washington Duke, Henry Hogg, Jethro Jeremiah Hazzard(come people Hazzard had to be named after somebody now) and Jed Davenport now they are anscestor's of Jesse, Boss and Cooter. Oh Jed is one the best Blacksmith's in Williamsburg. Let me know what you think of the story.
