If we had to guess, we would think James Best told him to get a stage name. We know he took acting lessons from James Best and what his real name is, such is the basis for our hypothesis. Are we even close?

Nice try, but it wasn't James Best at all. Loooong before Sonny was on the Dukes, Burt Reynolds gave him the nick when he started in film. And that, folks, is the real answer.

If you pay close attention Burt Reynolds uses the name Sonny in a lot of his movies for instance Hooper or The End his name is Sonny in both of those movies.
